Update: We're aware that the user experience on our apps can be improved. To enhance usability and ensure the integrity of te reo Māori, we are collaborating with our Engineering teams to optimise this further.

We understand the importance of accurate translation, and we take the time to ensure it's done right. As part of this commitment, translations across more areas of our apps are still in progress.

At Trade Me we want to inspire new beginnings with endless possibilities, whether it's finding a new job, home, car or that perfect new or secondhand item - or learning a phrase in a different language. Ao ake!

Partnering with Rōpū

We collaborate with licensed te reo translators and cultural kaitohutohu (advisors). This approach helps us maintain the integrity of the Māori language for our apps and ensures a more authentic integration of kupu Māori (Māori words).

Te Ao Māori at Tauhoko Trade Me

Beyond integrating te reo Māori into our app, we also have daily tari (office) kōrero (conversations) to encourage our people to explore te reo Māori and weave te ao Māori into their everyday lives.

Tauhoko Karakia: In collaboration with Nathan Riki, the Riki Consultancy whānau, and our internal te ao Māori employee network, we created a Tauhoko (Trade Me) Karakia. We use it to open and close all internal meetings to strengthen our team connection.

TupuToa Internship Programme: We’re proud to partner with TupuToa, an employment pathway that provides professional opportunities for Māori and Pacific tertiary students in corporate, government and community organisations.

Tari Translations: In collaboration with Riki Consultancy, we’ve introduced bilingual names for many everyday items in our offices in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and Pōneke (Wellington). This initiative is designed to help us all learn and grow our knowledge of te reo Māori.

Te ao Māori Community: A dedicated Slack channel for Māori employees and Te Ao Māori champions to connect and learn from each other in a safe space.

Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard. Ake ake ake!
